If the classic detective story this reminds me of weren't by an author other than Doyle, my guess would be that Holmes is looking for an Orangutan... ;-)

that's a reference to a story Edgar Allen Poe wrote, right? I only know that because i read a story about how a discussion of that story nearly ended in a fight between professors lol

Yes, Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue is the story that I meant, where the detective is C. Auguste Dupin, who is sorta like a proto-Sherlock.
I didn't know about the fighting professors though... :-D

From what I recall, the debate was about the story, and therefore Poe, having racist ideas present. The orangutan was the pivot point, as depending on some detail I don't recall, would either prove or disprove the racism, though no one could come to a consensus and it got so heated it was banned from discussion.
